Metal Detecting Sandals Let You Stroll in Geeky Style
By Dave Peterson | June 23, 2009

Last week was wall-to-wall iPhone news. Between the new 3.0 software and the new 3G S handset, it was tough to to find anything that wasn’t about that ubiquitous piece of hardware. So here’s something about as far from an iPhone as you can get and still be gadgety.
Hammacher Schlemmer, purveyors of things that make you go, “Huh?”, are offering a singularly weird tech mash-up. Metal detecting sandals are just the thing for people who are kind of interested in what might lay beneath the sands, but not enough so to want to burden their beach stroll with an actual swing-back-and-forth-in-front-of-you metal detector. The right sandal contains a copper coil powered by a battery pack (9-volt battery not included) worn on the calf. The detector gives off either a vibration or a buzz, when you walk over metal buried up to two feet below the surface. The metal detecting sandals are $59.95 at Hammacher Schlemmer. Time to hit the beach!
