CrunchPad Could Be the Color eReader of My Dreams
By Dave Peterson | June 6, 2009

Last December I voiced my desire for a small, light weight device that would serve me as a color eReader. I love the Kindle, but monochrome only takes you so far. I may be closer to having my tech wish fulfilled as Mike Arrington of TechCrunch has shared pictures of the newest draft of his proposed tablet device, bearing the name CrunchPad. It’s a touch screen tablet made for web browsing, that displays in landscape or portrait orientation and employs an onscreen keyboard and gesture control like the iPhone and iPod Touch. In his most recent post on the subject, Arrington says they have moved from a plastic case to an aluminum one (I love aluminum cases), and the overall thickness is about 18 mm. It uses an illuminated display rather than E Ink, so eye strain could be more of an issue with long reading sessions. It’s running a webkit-based browser on a Linux OS, and it’s due for a press event in July. Check out the YouTube video here to see the previous prototype in action.
Something like this is needed for the next step in digital reading, moving from plain monochrome text to a full-color presentation suitable for magazines. If the CrunchPad lives up to expectations, this could easily be my favorite gadget of the year.
