A Media Player Holder Without Suction Cup Concerns
By Dave Peterson | January 22, 2009

Last week I wrote about the iFlyz media player holder, a device designed to hold something like an iPod clipped to an airplane seat back tray. My major misgiving about the iFlyz was the way the gooseneck holder attaches to the player with a suction cup. Suction cups are notorious for being the weak link in holders for iPods and GPS receivers. Shortly after I posted, Rick Yaeger of MacMerc.com brought a suction-cup-free alternative to my attention, the IN YOUR FACE viewbase. It looked good, so I ordered one and have been using it for a of couple days.
I usually don’t cover two items that are very similar too closely together, but in this case I’m making an exception because I’m so impressed by the product. The viewbase has a flexible 8-inch neck and a strong clamp that opens two inches wide to attach the mount to a table top, computer monitor, car dashboard or many other edged surfaces. The mounting clamp features a hinged bottom, which allows it to securely grip a tapered surface. The real selling point for me is the clamping head which connects to the device being held. The clamp is spring loaded and opens to nearly three inches. I have no concerns that this will drop the player while in use as is often the case with suction cups. A nice bonus for devices like iPhones or iPods that are often kept in cases is that this head will clamp around nearly any case you might have.
The IN YOUR FACE viewbase is available the company’s web site for $29.95.

While the In Your Face product is a cool concept – it greatly suffers from poor workmanship. The first unit I purchased, quickly lost all gripping ability on the clamp. The second unit the spring clip broke within 10 uses. The third unit worked for about 3 months of daily use – then the gooseneck began to weaken and would not hold a device up any more. Clearly not worth $30 for a regular user (I am on 4-6 flights a week).
