i2i Stream Opens Wireless Audio Possibilities

    By Dave Peterson | October 11, 2008

I’ve tried a few different takes on wireless headphones, both RF and Bluetooth, but for various reasons haven’t been terribly satisfied with any of the solutions.  Now, a new option has come to my attention that’s taking an interest approach to wireless audio.

The Aerielle i2i Stream is a 2.4 GHz transceiver (about the size of an iPod) that will allow you to broadcast whatever audio you pass through it to other i2i Stream boxes on the same frequency, with a 30-foot range.  There are input and output jacks, so the sender can be wired while the receiving end gets the sound wirelessly.  There are seven channels, identified by seven different colors that can be displayed on the device’s face plate.  Audio source and speaker/headphone destination can be anything with a standard audio plug.  Battery life is 5 – 7 hours and recharging is accomplished through a USB connection.  The transceiver also has its own volume/mute control.

The best part of something as open-ended as this is coming up with possible uses.  The obvious options are wireless audio for music, gaming, television, but there are other possibilities as well.  Want to watch a video on your iPod Touch, but send the sound wirelessly to your sound system across the room.  This will do it.  For about $100, you get two units, four audio cables and two USB charging cables.
