Geoff Smith’s Dynamic Album
By Dave Peterson | July 1, 2008
One of the most exciting things about the Internet is the set of tools it provides to allow clever, but lightly funded, individuals to do things better than the big companies that have always controlled traditional media distribution. I’ve written previously about this in the example of video podcasting and the potential it has for changing the way we get our news and entertainment programming. Another example just showed up in my inbox today.
Besides being the official soundtrack provider of Web 2.0, Geoff Smith is pretty clever about marketing his music on the web. Today, with Klaus Lovgreen, his his co-founder at RingtoneFeeder.com, he is rolling out a digital pre-release of his new album, “Ones and 0s” on the RingtoneFeeder site. They are calling this a “Dynamic Album”, because it will actually be delivered through an RSS feed, and it won’t stop after the initial album is on a purchaser’s hard drive. Geoff and Klaus intend to continue pushing out related content such as videos, ringtones and karaoke versions of the album’s songs every two weeks for a year after release. They can do this because they understand the opportunities afforded by their delivery technology and because they care about a continuing relationship with the people who support their work. This is where online commerce can totally outshine the brick-and-mortar model, in recognizing the relationship between buyer and seller and keeping it active well after the moment of sale.
