A Gadget to Open Gadgets
By Dave Peterson | May 31, 2008

Everyone who buys small electronics knows the misery that is heat-sealed clamshell packaging. Until recently, I attacked these very durable clear plastic fortresses with my trusty Swiss army knife. It worked, but inelegantly. Only occasionally was blood lost in the process.
A few months ago I started using Black and Decker Power Scissors to open this type of packaging, and it works great. A quick, easy cut inside the heat seal line, and these previously impenetrable bubbles surrender their treasures. Electric scissors are a highly recommended addition to any gadget lover’s tool drawer.

Hmmm, I’ll have to add this to my wish list to try out. I just recently picked up the my 3rd in non-powered gadget that claims to be a tool for opening such packages.
What I’ve been trying most recently was: http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/tools/9e01/
What I just recently picked up is:

I forget what the first one was, except that they sold as 1 or 4 … and I thought it would make a good gift. Of course, once I tried it….
Though so far no repeat of a few years ago, where I tried to put the large blade of my swiss army knife through the middle of my left hand. That was messy.

Awesome tip, Dave! I use pruning shears specially marketed as a gadget opener.
