    The Traveling Gadget Bag

    By Dave Peterson | April 5, 2008

I’m jumping on a plane for Disneyworld tomorrow morning, and for me, part of the vacation planning process is determining what gadgets I’ll be taking.  A few things are givens, such as my iPhone and iPod (still waiting for an iPhone with adequate capacity so that I can lose the iPod entirely).  My Kindle and Nokia N810 will be coming along, too, the N810 mainly for its GPS qualities.  This looks to be a photographically heavy trip, so in addition to my favorite tiny digital camera (a 7.1 MP Canon SD1000 that fits very easy in my jeans pocket), I’m planning to try out a couple of new additions.  First is a new Sanyo Xacti HD1000 video camera offering full 1080i resolution in a form-factor easily held in the palm of the hand.  It also shoots 4 MP stills. Storage is handled by an SD card, either standard or high capacity.  I’ve got a 16 GB card that will hold 4 hours of HD video. Unfortunately, I’m told it doesn’t have very good compatibility when plugging directly into a Mac.  Seems it doesn’t work well with the current version of QuickTime. I plan to just remove the card and transfer the files using a reader. (The Eye-Fi reader appears to be compatible with SD-HC format cards.)  One more video-related item is a small 9-LED video light from Sima.  It was relatively cheap, so if it gives any kind of help in low-light close-up conditions, I’ll be pleased.  Also new in my photo bag is a Lensbaby 3G, an interesting specialty lens for my digital SLR.  I plan to review that from the road, with a couple of pictures to show what it does, so that’s all I want to say about it now.  Also new for this trip is the Monster Power Outlets to Go 4, to provide an easy overnight recharge station for everything without causing too much added bulk in my luggage.

And speaking of luggage, an empty suitcase is currently trying to make me feel guilty, so I better go do something about it.  Apologies in advance to the poor TSA screener who’s going to get “the guy with all the gadgets” tomorrow.

      Dave,

Have a fun trip! I can relate to traveling with many gadgets. I can’t go anywhere without my laptop, cellphone, etc.

You mean the guy with all the gadgets flying isn’t just me?

Of course, an e-holster tends to draw extra attention from the TSA.

I guess, so does the ton of cables (haphazardly) thrown in with lots of electronics. Seems they always want to test my bag for explosives.
