iPhone SDK Update: …Not So Fast There, Devs

    By Dave Peterson | March 14, 2008

A week ago, when Apple announced their iPhone SDK and Developer Program that would allow anyone with appropriate coding skill and a good idea to legitimately market non-web-based iPhone applications, it seemed the door was wide open.  This morning, as politely worded e-mails began to go out en masse to a seemingly large portion of those who were ready to join the program at either the $99 Developer level or the $299 Enterprise level, a new message emerged: Thanks for your interest, we’ll get back to you.  It turns out that what began last Thursday was a limited beta period, a point not made terribly clear during the presentation.  With over 100,000 downloads of the SDK, this is pretty reasonable, but it could have been handled much better from a PR perspective.  The good news is that these aren’t really “rejections” as they are being broadly portrayed around the web, just a clarification that this is a limited beta period. Developers can still work with the SDK, and possibly have good, solid apps ready to go when the authorized developer certificates become more available (I hope) in June.
