So Close, You Can Taste It

    By Dave Peterson | March 10, 2008

One of my favorite curse-blessings of the current gadget and tech world is the sense of what’s just over the horizon.  The blessing part should be apparent, the curse part… well, the best stuff always seems just out of reach.  An example of that is the Samsung SWT-W100K, a convergence device about the size of a Nokia N810 Internet tablet, equipped with a 4.3-inch touchscreen.  Capabilities include 4G mobile Internet (with downloads up to 13 Mbps), phone (with video, if you wish), 2 MP camera, GPS receiver, media player, and over-the-air digital TV.  This is one step closer to a fully capable computer replacement we can carry around in our pockets.  The downside? It’s only available in Korea, at the moment.  That’s okay, of course, as the WiMAX network that would be required to run it doesn’t exist in any wide scale yet in my neck of the woods (the United States).  But it feels so close.  I’ve only had my iPhone for a couple of months, but it’s given me a sample of what’s possible.  Now, I want WiMAX and next-generation all-in-one devices to make good on the promise.
