    Paid By Pixels

    By Dave Peterson | February 25, 2008

There’s a lot that I admire about Cali Lewis and Neal Campbell. High on the list is the way they set ambitious goals for themselves and then use some very creative thinking to reach those goals. They’ve had a long-term dream of touring the country in a motor home, and now they’re going to make that happen, shooting Geek Brief TV and two additional shows on the road as they explore fifty states in fifty weeks (an airplane will take them to Hawaii at the end of the trip). This dream comes with a considerable price tag, and they are approaching it with their characteristic ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit. They’ve established a new web site, www.paidbypixels.com, that in addition to helping finance the Big Trip, is putting some pretty effective advertising exposure within reach of small web site operators. For as little as $50, someone can buy a 10×10 pixel square on the site, (total capacity of 1,000,000 pixels, 846,800 currently available as of this writing). That’s small, but noticeable, when viewing the full page. Move the mouse over that little block and a much larger ad appears, and a click will take you to the advertised web site. Cali and Neal have said that these ads will stay up for at least two years, which makes the monthly cost of a 100 pixel square a little over two dollars. That’s pretty affordable advertising. They’ll be giving very visible exposure to these ads (on a rotating basis) on the Geek Brief show site (which has some pretty good traffic) and their family of related sites. They also plan to promote paidbypixels.com on the RV they’ll be driving around the country, dramatically increasing the number of people who might see an ad. Buying some space on the site will not only help two of the nicest people on the Internet create some really great video, it’s a great advertising opportunity for those of us who might not be able to otherwise afford such wide exposure.
