It look likes things are going to be happening pretty quickly as the HD disc format war wraps itself up. Today the Financial Times reported that Paramount may have an escape clause from their recently-signed exclusivity contract with HD-DVD. The clause seems to be contingent on Warner Brothers going Blu-ray exclusive. If Paramount had such a provision, it’s likely that Dreamworks did as well. If those two go, that leaves only Universal as HD-DVD-exclusive. I’m betting Universal will go Blu by mid-year (maybe a lot sooner). And as for Paramount, it looks like I’ll finally get those original “Star Trek” remasters on Blu-ray for which I’ve been waiting. The bad news for new adopters of Blu-ray is that the big sales incentives are likely over. People who got them at Christmas were among the last financial beneficiaries of the format war, and Blu-ray Disc players have already seen a hefty price increase. Which makes the PlayStation 3 (with its built-in Blu-ray player) look like a pretty reasonable purchase for anyone who wants to go HD and has even a passing interest in gaming.
